In Her Shoes is a mixed-media installation that questions the meaning of healing, conserving and destructing through different female-dominant art practices, including handicrafts, performance art, and feminine writing (écriture feminine).
The exhibition can be experienced as a single atmosphere, as a never ending construction of a self dwelling space, as a safe boat on turbulent waters.
Öykü Özgencil's solo exhibition "In Her Shoes" is a research-art project that incorporates multiple mixed media works. The exhibition space, Hosek Contemporary in Berlin, is housed in a former riverboat. Therefore, the exhibition installation was reimagined in collaboration with the artist.
The artist wanted to transfer the research process in detail without losing the atmosphere of the work and within the constraints of a limited space. Hence, the space was divided into defined areas with tulle using a tensioned hanging system. Since it was not possible to drive nails or build temporary walls on the boat, all display units were rethought and designed using the spatial capabilities of the boat.
Mobile furniture was manufactured in Istanbul and designed to be deconstructed for transportation to Berlin. To ensure that the artworks remained the focal point in the space, all display units were selected as transparent or translucent fabrics.
